Your Recordings Wanted!
From conception, I’ve wanted the Audio Kitchen blog to be not only a place where you can hear amateur recordings, but also where you can easily post and share sound that you have found. And the good news is that I’ve actually installed a tool on the site that should make this pretty simple, but despite my best efforts I don’t have all the bugs worked out yet. Once I get this feature up and running it should make it relatively easy for you to upload MP3’s and JPG’s of your audio treasures right from your hard drive to this site, and write a post to go with it. When this becomes a reality I will announce it here. Meanwhile, you can still contribute recordings to the Audio Kitchen. And gosh I hope you will. But for now, it will take more than a few clicks.
Meanwhile, there are a number of ways you can get your amateur recordings to me now. And they all involve sending me a preliminary email. You can do that by using the contact form on this page. But perhaps first I should say something about what I’m looking for, as far as contributions..
- Almost any "found" recording you may have come across that you consider to be compelling.
- Something you, or a friend or relative recorded in the past. The more past the better.
-
In general, I’m not looking for anybody to create any recordings for the blog. I’m looking for recordings rescured from obscurity, not the other way around.
So here’s the deal. Until I update the site, you’re going to have to email me before sending me anything. Again, the form is below. If you’re able to digitize your recording(s) and compress them to MP3, you can probably just send them to me via the internet. Unless you’re sure they’re stereo, please encode mono no higher than 96kbps. As low as 56k or 40k is probably OK. Lo-fi recordings don’t get better at higher bitrates. If you have something less than 8MB (or that you can chop into 8MB or less segments) then you may be able to send it to me via email. Larger files won’t work this way. I have FTP setup with this site, but I’m not sure if I’m going to use it for this yet. Best solution may be a service like "You Send It" which I’ve heard the Bob Lassiter Airchecks site has had good luck with. There’s plenty of other services where you can send large files over the web, do a google search. Once you upload something there send me the link in an email and I’ll grab it. Again, you’ll need to email me with the form below to do this.
Otherwise, you’ll have to send me something in the mail. To do that, tell me what you have and I’ll send you a snail mail address to ship your audio my way. If you can record your artifacts into the computer and make a CD, great. Send that to me. If you can make a cassette copy (with a dual deck, or whatever) do that too and send me the copy. If you have no way to duplicate the recording you have, then perhaps you can sent it to me and I’ll copy it myself and send it back to you. I’d rather have a copy to be honest, and not have to be responsible for the master. But if you think it’s worth it, send me an email and I’ll decide it you should go to the trouble of sending me your original recording. And if I’m going to post your recordings, it would be great if you could tell me something about it, and where you found the thing.
So, hopefully this explains how you can be a part of the proceedings here. The Audio Kitchen radio show was a success because so many people came forward to share their recordings on the program. I hope this site continues that tradition. And if you’re a found sound collector, please join in on the fun. Once I post a number of your finds here, I’ll put up a link so people can browse finds on the site. And once you establish a nice pile of recordings here I’ll give you your own home page where people can find out more about you and your collecting obsessions and interests.
So please consider sharing here. For now, it all begins with sending an email using the contact form below. I do look forward to hearing from you.
The Professor
